Strada Bucura School
Craiova, Romania, 2010
This 4500 m2 K-12 school was completed by Ethos Open Hands, a humanitarian organization based in Switzerland. Part of a multi-phase capacity building project in Craiova, Romania, the school was completed in 2010, for a total construction cost of 2.5 million Euros. A single loaded circulation spine allows natural light to filter in through south facing courtyards. Romania has large forest reserves, but during the communist era became heavily reliant on pre-cast concrete. The wood skeleton of the school demonstrates North American techniques of light-frame construction and engineered timbers.
